Welcome to Team Fairmont!

Team Fairmont Racers has been an active club for over three decades.

The club is for girls & boys aged 5-14 with the goal to produce well-rounded skiers and snowboarders that LOVE the sport.

Gate training and all mountain skiing are incorporated to ensure a solid development of a variety of skiing skills as well as confidence and joy of skiing & snowboarding.

The team trains and competes from the end of December thru to mid-March.  We have two race events scheduled to help consolidate the skills developed and take advantage of opportunities to put the skills to use in a proper race environment.

About Our Programs

SKI

Team Fairmont Racers U12:  The SportChek Snow Stars (SCSS) Team Fairmont Racers is the FUNdamental stage of ski racing. The philosophy is to promote fun, safety, skill development, and fair play. Children are introduced to basic skiing techniques and skills in small groups and in as many different snow conditions as possible.

Most importantly, the program promotes having fun on skis. The children participate within their club, in team and individual competitions. These events encourage new friendships in a fun and friendly environment while demonstrating the skills developed in the SCSS Team Fairmont Racers.

This program includes all day Saturday training and half-day Sunday as an extra option.

Saturday Program Price:  $475 + GST. (Club fee $398.5, BC Alpine Reg. $76.5)

Sunday Extra Option Price:  $225 + GST.

For the origins of the program, read this message from Nancy Greene and visit the official Nancy Greene Ski League website.

Team Fairmont Racers U14 – Fairmonsters:  A great opportunity for your older child to continue to build on the technique and skills developed.  This program expands on the focus on racing to include Slalom and GS.  Through a more intensive concentration on racing technique, children grow in all aspects of their ski ability and confidence.

This is a full weekend program (Saturday and Sunday) for kids aged 12-17, with 23 days on snow.

Price:  $737 + GST. (Club fee $623.5 Sat & Sun Fees, BC Alpine Reg. $112.5)

Whiskey Jacks:  The Whiskey Jacks is our transitional program that successfully guides your child from Snowbirds into the Team Fairmont Racers program.  Whiskey Jacks move from the foundational Snowbirds skills to parallel skiing, and the initial phases of edging and ski control at higher speed and more challenging terrain.

Whiskey Jacks program is 10 weeks, with 10 – 1/2 days on snow.  The season kicks off January 5, 2019.

Price: $300 + GST.

Snowbirds:  This is the foundational program from which all of our other programs stem.  From the age of four (4) our incredibly capable and talented team of instructors will instil the basics of ski technique and competency.

Successful completion of Snowbirds sets your child up for an easy transition into our Nancy Green racing and ski development program.

You have a choice of Saturday or Sunday – or both! – afternoons in two 5-week sessions running from early January to mid-March.

Price: $99/5 week session (+GST).

Equipment

Appropriate gear to ensure for race and overall ski development

By mid-September it’s time to start looking into getting gear for the kids (and parents). Starting early will help ensure you get the equipment you want and need, as many stores carry only a limited supply of sizes. Purchasing equipment and clothing is always a personal choice, but there are a few things that are very important for your aspiring racers.

Skis: over the years, the shape of skis has changed dramatically. Along with those changes there have also been adjustments in the ski techniques and teaching approaches. For our Nancy Greene programs, it is imperative that all of our skiers are on Shape Skies.  With the techniques we are teaching, the old style straight skis just cannot perform the way we need them to.

Boots: when buying boots, it is important to select a pair that fits the skier based on their current foot size, not the size their foot may be in two years. Boots that are too large make it difficult for the skier to feel properly connected to their skis. It is also important at this age to avoid overly stiff or high boots. A lower, more flexible boot will allow the skier to move more naturally and have a better feel for their skis.

Helmet: what can we say about helmets other than the obvious. It’s your child’s head, so please make sure they have a properly fitted helmet that is made for skiing. If possible, we would like to see all of our skiers in full (racing type) helmets. These helmets provide extra protection around the ears and back of the head that is important for the kids when they are skiing in gates. They also keep their heads warmer.

Poles: a young skier’s size, strength and skill level must all be considered when determining if they need poles. If you have a very young skier and you are uncertain if they should be using poles then the best thing is to ask for some advice from their coach. As a general rule, when we see a skier that is ready for poles, we will let the parents know. Our philosophy is to get the kids using poles as soon as they can properly manage them as they are a very important part of learning proper skiing techniques.

Shin Guards: for our U10(8&up) racers, we would like them to have shin guards for the Sunday morning training, as quite often we will be working on slalom during these training sessions.

Where to Go: once again, where you purchase your equipment is a personal choice, but we highly recommend that you deal with a reputable shop that specializes in skiing and snowboarding equipment. Most ski shops provide equipment for racers at a race price, so be sure to ask. Many also have racer discounts (10% – 15%) on clothing and accessories.

The Last Word:  the Fairmont Rental Shop has very kindly offered TeamFairmont their assistance in helping our racers with any sudden equipment problems or setup issues. The Rental Shop carries Rossignol gear and has all the equipment necessary to service or setup Rossignol skis and bindings. The shop will also put together yearly rental packages for anyone who may be interested.

Rossignol has an excellent line-up of junior racing skis for kids ages 6 to 14 years. The line-up provides a good progression for the kids allowing them to work with skis that have a similar design and feel from a very young age.  If you’re looking for new equipment, you may want to check out the Rossignol site.

Ski Tuning

These videos are incredibly helpful and can walk you through the tuning and waxing process from start to finish.

If you’re still a little hesitant, we can help!  The lovely Peter Harding has offered $12.50/pair to sharpen; $5.00/pair to wax.  Drop off Sunday to have ready for the next Saturday.

Check in with Chris for details!
