Jacket Order and Wrap-up Party

Team Jacket Order

Team Fairmont Helly Hansen team jacket order

Suzanne Blackwell will be taking jacket orders once again! This Saturday, March 9th, at the end of the ski day at around 3:30 pm, please see Suzanne for sizing and to place your team jacket order.

Annual Wrap-up Party

Additionally, plans are in the works for the end of season wrap-up party. As usual, it will be a pot-luck affair, with each family committing to one dish. There is need for a couple of slab cakes, salads, veggies, water, pop, chips, and barbeque. It’s been suggested that ‘someone’ bring ample Black Forest Salad (wink, wink!).

Please also check in with Suzanne regarding your contribution this Saturday.

Looking forward to a great weekend!

Cook’s Cook Out and Helen Bavin Memorial Race Update

Yay – it’s that time of year again! It’s the much anticipated day where we gather at the pleasure of Gary and Trina Cook as they generously host the annual Cook’s Cook-out at the top of the hill.

There will be a hot dog BBQ, chips, drinks, and, everybody’s fave, DIY ice cream sundaes!

Things kick off around 12:15 on Saturday and it’s open to Team Fairmont skiers and parents.

Thanks so much, in advance, Gary and Trina. We know it’s a big deal to make happen – hauling BBQs and a ton of foods to our scenic summit! Please know how much we all appreciate and look forward to it.

The Helen Bavin Memorial Race is on Sunday, March 10th. Coaches would like to get going by 10:00 am to begin warm-up and course inspection, with race start at 11:00 am.

Roles we need to be filled are: helping distribute bibs/numbers, assisting coaches with the younger kids on the lift; keeping the race course clear of the general public, and other various and sundry tasks. Please check with Chris when you arrive to see if there’s anything needs done.

Helen Bavin Memorial Race Weekend

We are gearing up for a great weekend of racing next weekend, March 9th and 10th, 2019!

Saturday is our usual training day, but be prepared for another Club Race in the afternoon in preparation for the real thing on Sunday.

The annual Helen Bavin Memorial Race is the next day, Sunday, March 10th. We want everyone to be with their coaches, on snow. by 10 am in preparation for course inspection and race start around 10:30 (or as soon as teams have completed inspection).

Please be sure skis are properly tuned!

This is a fun, team event and we look forward to challenging the other regional clubs.

If you have any other questions about the weekend, please contact Chris.

Kimberley Alpine Nancy Greene Festival | January 26-27, 2019

Despite a slightly abbreviated training timeline in preparation for the event this year, we’re excited to see our eager and talented Team Fairmont rip it up this weekend at Kimberley Alpine Resort for the annual Nancy Green Festival for racers U6 thru U12.

This is a 2-day competition with 6 events over the weekend: Giant Slalom and speed trap on Saturday; Dual Slalom on Sunday; and a BBQ lunch each day. All events will take place on Moe’s Run.

Please let Chris know that your kids will be attending by Wednesday Jan 23 at the latest! cveen@fhsr.com

Registration fees $40 per athlete. Cheques payable to Kimberley Alpine Team and can be paid in person early Saturday morning to Rod Kashuba.

All competitors receive 20% off regular lift ticket rates. Other costs include your own travel, lift tickets, accommodations, and meals.

Please meet at the Day Lodge to collect bibs by 8:15 am. We want to be on snow at 9 am so as to have plenty of time for warm-up and course inspection.

Awards will be presented in the Plaza at 3:30 both Saturday and Sunday.

All competitors MUST complete the following RCR on-line waivers a min. of 48 hours prior to the event.

This is the link to the waiver: ONLINE WAIVER (required).

A fun yet challenging weekend of competition, it’s an event where our team historically performs very well. Regardless of the results, however, it’s always an enjoyable weekend for the whole family. See you there!

Tickets may be picked up Friday at Guest Services until 5 pm. Guest Services reopens Saturday morning at 8:15 am but could be very busy.

See the Race Notice for general info HERE.

Calendar Updates, Gear Reminder

Alpine skiing equipment

Just an update to announce regarding the calendar:

  • We have planned for three Club Series races – Feb 2, Feb 23, and Mar 9. These are fantastic opportunities to gauge progress and help develop young skiers competence and confidence in courses – fabulous for over-all ski development! That said, it’s great if you ensure these are days NOT missed.
  • The Helen Bavin Memorial ski race is scheduled for Sunday, March 10, 2019

A note about appropriate Team Fairmont gear: we encourage the use of proper ski racing equipment for good reason: when your child is on sharp skis of a shorter turn radius – race skis – they are much better able to meet the demands of our program and progress quickly and more confidently. An all-mountain or twin-tip ski is going to allow for larger more sweeping turns – not great for promoting the ski technique we seek to achieve in a developing skier.

Understand that our focus is NOT to develop ski racers, per se. What we want to encourage is a solid, competent, confident ski technique, and rapidly. Using the proper ski, that is appropriately tuned, helps us achieve this goal.

Speaking of tuning. We nag about tuning because to achieve our goals, SHARP EDGES ARE IMPORTANT!

If you need more information about the recommended equipment, please talk to Chris or Gary – they’re more than happy to help!

Additionally, please ask Chris or Gary about letting you try a comparable race ski for yourself so that you can see and, more importantly, feel the difference. The difference will surprise you and it will help you significantly in making more informed choices regarding your child’s gear.

See you Saturday!

Expectations to Ensure Success!

Hi Team!

Last weekend was a great start to the 2019 season and we’re looking forward to a great year watching your youngsters expand their skills and develop into more confident, competent skiers.

Just a re-cap from Gary’s meeting at the end of the day on Saturday.

  1. All groups will be departing the Snow School sign at 10:30 sharp. Instructors will NOT be waiting for late-comers. If you are late, your child will have to catch up to us on the hill.
  2. We cannot say enough about the importance of preparedness, particularly when it comes to gear. For your child to progress as per the Team Fairmont goals, it’s SO important that your skier is outfitted with the appropriate gear. If you’re unclear as to what that entails, please read more HERE.
  3. In addition to appropriate equipment, it is VITAL that skis are properly tuned for racing. This will be different than the typical tuning performed in the rental shop. If you’d like more information about proper tuning technique, please stick around after skiing, 4pm on Saturday, January 12, as Gary will be providing a hands-on clinic. You can also refer to this video for a step-by-step guide.
  4. A calendar item: The Kimberley Nancy Green Festival, two full days of racing fun, will be taking place January 26 and 27, 2019.

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to talk to Chris or Gary. They’re happy to help!

2019 Team Fairmont Racers Season Open

It’s been a bit touch-and-go as far as season openers are concerned but we are getting excited to jump into Team Fairmont Racers this Saturday!

This year we will welcome a number of new skiers to the program. This means sorting and re-sorting for the first couple of weeks until we get skill levels sorted and appropriate groups identified.

Gary will be hosting a parents info session on Saturday Jan. 5th after skiing at 4:00 in the day lodge. The purpose of this meeting will be to explain some of our plans, events and workings out on snow.

Please have a look at http://teamfairmont.ca/calendar/ for this season’s calendar. We will likely change the dates of the club series races, but will keep you posted in advance with updates.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday!

2017-18 Team Fairmont Season Wrap Up!

To wrap up a fantastic season we want to remind you about our final day of training and fun!

This Saturday, March 17th, parents be sure to have your skis and race legs tuned so as to avoid complete humiliation as your children beat you to the finish!  Our annual Kids vs. Parents ski race will be held in the morning after some warmup runs for the team (and yourselves!).

Training begins in the morning as per usual.

Kids vs. Parents Race begins:  1:00 PM.

Following the race and awards, at about 3:30 we’ll be in the lodge for the wrap up.  The deck grill will be hot and ready, just be sure to bring your favourite BBQ items and sides.

Thanks everyone and see you Saturday!
